The Wave hat has
ear flaps to keep you
toasty warm.

Materials and Gauge

Size: Adult

Materials:

Main Color (MC): 1 skein Cascade 220 (220yds/100g), natural white (w on chart)

Contrast Color 1 (CC 1): 1 skein Cascade Cloud 9 (109yds/50g), dark blue (B on chart)

Contrast Color 2 (CC 2): 1 skein Cascade Cloud 9 (109yds/50g), aqua (a on chart)

Needles: US #5 16” circular, US #7 16” circular, US #6 set of 4 dpns

Gauge: 6 sts/inch using #7 needles in Wave Pattern. Be sure to do your gauge in the round.

Instructions

Using #5 circulars and MC, CO 120 sts. Place a marker and join into the round, making sure not to twist. Knit for 2 1⁄2 “.

Purl one round (this is where the hem folds under). /p>

Knit two more rounds.

Change to #7 needles and begin Wave Pattern (see chart). Work rows 1-15 once and then rows 1-13 again.

Knit one row in MC.

Begin decreasing as follows, changing to double points when necessary:

Row 1: K10, K2tog around.

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: K9, K2tog around.

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: K8, K2tog around.

Row 6: Knit

Row 7: K7, K2tog around.

Row 8: Knit

Row 9: K6, K2tog around.

Row 10: Knit

Row 11: K5, K2tog around.

Row 12: Knit

Row 13: K4, K2tog around.

Row 14: Knit

Row 15: K3, K2tog around.

Row 16: K2, K2tog around.

Row 17: K1, K2tog around.

Row 18: K2tog around.

Break the yarn and draw the end through the remaining stitches.

Fold up the hem and sew it.

Ear Flaps

With MC and #5 needles, begin 1⁄2” from the center back. Pick up and knit 43 sts towards the front of the hat.

Next row and all even numbered rows through Row 24: knit.

Row 1: SSK, K 18, SK2P, K 18, K2tog.

Row 3: SSK, knit until 2 sts remain, K2tog.

Row 5: SSK, K 15, SK2P, K 15, K2tog.

Row 7: SSK, knit until 2 sts remain, K2tog.

Row 9: SSK, K 12, SK2P, K 12, K2tog.

Row 11: SSK, knit until 2 sts remain, K2tog.

Row 13: SSK, K 9, SK2P, K 9, K2tog.

Row 15: SSK, knit until 2 sts remain, K2tog.

Row 17: SSK, K 6, SK2P, K 6, K2tog.

Row 19: SSK, knit until 2 sts remain, K2tog.

Row 21: SSK, K 3, SK2P, K 3, K2tog.

Row 23: SSK, knit until 2 sts remain, K2tog.

Row 25: SSK, SK2P, K2tog.

Row 26: K3tog.

Break the yarn and pass it through the remaining stitch.

Repeat on the other side.

Finishing

Sew in all ends.

Ties

Cut four 24” strands of each color. Separate them into two bundles containing two of each color. Thread the first bundle through the point of one earflap. Separate the colors into three sets and braid them. Tie off the end and trim. Repeat for the other earflap.

Pompom

Take an end of each color and wrap it around three or four fingers of your hand until you have a fair sized ball.

Tie an 18” piece of yarn around the ball and pull it very tight.

Cut the sides of the ball and trim it so that it is round. Be careful not to cut the tie.

Thread the two ends of the tie through the top of the hat and tie a square knot on the inside.  

Sew in the ends and block.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

K - Knit

P - Purl

st/sts - stitch/stitches

MC - main color

CC1 - contrast color 1

CC2 - contrast color 2

K2tog - knit 2 stitches together as if they were one stitch

K3tog - knit 3 stitches together as one

SSK - slip 2 sts one at a time knitwise, put the left needle through the stitches to the front and knit them together.

SK2P - slip 2 sts together knitwise as if you are knitting them together, knit the next stitch then pass the two slipped stitches over the stitch you just knit.
