This is a great first lace project!
You can use DK (double-knit) or sport-weight cotton
for this to make a nice little kerchief for your hair.
To do this project, you will need to know how to do
a slip 1 (Sl1), yarn over (YO) and a knit 2 together (K2tog) in addition
to the usual knit, purl, cast-on and bind-off.
This pattern can also be adapted to a shawl pattern.
All you do is just follow the pattern in any yarn you like until your
shawl reaches the desired size.
Cast on 3sts using US size 7 needles.
Purl the 3 sts.
Setup:
Row 1: Sl1, YO, K1, YO, K1.
Row 2 and all even numbered rows
throughout pattern:
Sl1, Purl to the end.
Row 3: Sl1, YO, K3, YO, K1.
Row 5: Sl1, YO, K5, YO, K1.
Row 7: Sl1, YO, K3, YO K2tog, K2,
YO, K1.
Row 9: Sl1, YO, K3, YO, K2tog, YO,
K2tog, K2,
YO, K1.
Row 11: Sl1, YO, K5, YO, K2tog, K4,
YO, K1.
Pattern Stitch
Row 1: Sl1, YO, K3, *YO, K2tog,
K4*, repeat the section between the stars until 5 sts remain, YO, K2tog,
K2, YO, K1.
Row 3: Sl1, YO, K3, *YO, K2tog,
YO, K2tog, K2*, repeat section between stars until 1 st remains, YO,
K1.
Row 5: Sl1, K5, *YO, K2tog, K4*,
repeat section
between stars until 1 st remains, YO, K1.
Repeat rows 1-6 of the pattern stitch
until the kerchief measures 9‰ long or so. It is more important
to end just having done Row 6 than it is to be exactly 9" long.
Make the tie as follows:
Knit to the end of the row without
working the pattern.
CO 20sts at the end of the row.
Turn and knit the 20sts you just
cast on and the remaining stitches of the row, then:
CO another 20 sts at the end of
the row.
Knit 4 more rows.
BO very loosely.
Sew in your ends.
Block the kerchief as follows:
Place it on an ironing board, place a damp wash cloth
over it, and press it gently with a steam iron. Do not let the iron
directly touch the knitting.
Spread out the now damp kerchief to open up the lace.
Cover it and steam it again.
Let it dry flat.
